As reported by users and reviewers, this DSLR had certain drawbacks too, like – poor low light image quality in high ISO (after 800 – 1600 ISO) and these images or videos get grainy. The Auto Focus has limited capacity to shoot in low light and the image sharpness reduces in wide angle.
Overall, Sony A77 is built for a real world with a magnesium alloy body that combines high strength with light weight. Fast and good auto focus • Focus peaking • Body image stabilizer • Noisy autofocus especially with 3rd party lens • Noisy images above ISO800 • 12 FBS with semi-transparent mirror technology • Custom flash connector • Poor low light image quality in high ISO
Love the focus peaking (shows you what's in focus with a hi-light color) - its great for tweaking the focus.
Nikon D7000 had the most focus points, but it was equally bad in noisyautofocus motor during video.
In the bodyimage stabilizer - worksreally fine, I sometimes manage to take pixel-sharp shots at 1/8 sec at f=40 mm (60mm equivalent!)
Focus is FAST.
Autofocus makes it reallynice, but noise from autofocus can be an issue especially with 3rd party lens.
As a die-hard Canon girl who's invested quite a bit in Canon lenses and bodies over the years, I was prepared to not like the Sony, or think it was too "different" to adjust.
The images become noisy above ISO800, but that's the price for semi-transparent mirror, which allows 12fps and other advantages.
For lowlight operation, I couldn't tell a difference between all three, they're all poor in imagequality in high iso.
Amazing camera with outstanding features • Good B&W photos • Good quality pictures even in auto mode • Very good photos with no flash and little ISO noise problems
A77 is a game changer for those who lovesphotography and have patience to spend time to learn&practice this cameras features.I spend alot of timepracticinglowlightphotos and has got amazing results. It's a great competitor for Canon& nikon.Video performance is far better than its competitors.
So I can make a pretty crummy camera like my old Kodak digital camera still take some neatshots using the light and knowing the camera'slimitations.
Pros:Excellentquality of the images, lots of features to play with.I do consider this camera as a professionalcamera.
The Sony A77 is an excellentDSLRcamera at a reasonableprice considering all the features and specifications.
Although the NEXcameras have amazinglowlightcapabilities, I just love the strobists' style of photography.
Keep in mind that the camera was judged based on price, features and imagequality against other cameras that they considered in the same category as this one.
Also a quick note on image quality/noise for the pictures this camera takes.
This's my firstqualitydslrcamera.
Sometimes you find a camera that seems to take great pictures every time you press the shutterrelease, this's one of those cameras.
Picturequality and the ease of use are bestparts of this camera.
But I know a qualityphotograph when I see one, and every shot from this camera so far, is a qualitypicture.
There's a night/day difference between the quality of pictures I take with this camera and pictures I took with the A700.
If you're serious about shooting high quality stills and video, want a DSLR for a reasonableprice and aren't intimidated by Canon/Nikon snobs this camera is reallyworth considering.
The operation is smooth, and this camera delivers very nicehugepictures.
it's a sophisticated camera but it's very easy to use and produces great pictures, great job Sony.
Low image quality after 800 ISO till 1600 ISO • Camera Panorama mode • Digital 1.4 and 2.x zoom • Picture mode with HDR paint mode • Better quality RAW image data • Good quality kit lens • Light weight with lots of features • Pictures get noisy • AF fails in low light or limited capacity to shoot in low light • Image sharpness reduces in wide angle long DOF • Grainy images or video in low light
The camera does have an option to shoot high qualitypictures at even 6400 ISO, but the render time is very long.
After 800 ISOimagequalitystartsdegrading slowly till 1600 ISO which is the last usableISO setting with acceptableresults.
Now for the fun stuff the camera can do: 1) in camerapanoramamode; 2) digital 1.4 and 2.x zoom; 3) what I call Super Automode for the times when you're just shootingsnapshots of family, things etc.; 4) and my favorite is the "Picture Mode"- with HDR Paint mode, b/w monotone, b/w spotcolor, soft focus, toy camera, etc. Conclusion: I'm very impressed with the a77.
When comparing it with previouscamera, I realized that while the pictures got noisy, they were in focus, compared to my previouscamera where the AF would fail in lowlight.
RAWimagedata is much better, so if you've the time to edit your photos, shootRAW.
The only department this camerafallsshort in is it's limited capacity to shoot in lowlight.
overall the body is so good, lightweight, lot of features, and the imagequality of the kit lens is excellent, razor sharpimagequality in f/2.8 portrait, but in wide anglelongDOF f/6.3 above, the imagesharpnessreduce.
So 4 stars day timeimages are reallydetailed and nice.
One issue I found was that if you shoot under fieldlights at high ISOs with the whitebalance set to Auto, colors can vary greatly.
It'll still focus very well in lowlight, but the images/video become very grainy.
