Newborn Toys Buying Guide

Reviews of Top 10 Newborn Toys - Side by Side Comparison

It is important to select age-appropriate toys for your child. A good toy should challenge child's level of development. Buying a toy that is too advanced for the child, especially newborn, can lead to a frustrated child and could be a possible safety hazard.[1][2] Many baby toys are specifically designed to help babies develop, using motor skills, visual comprehension, and language.[3]

Newborn Toys (0-6 months): A newborn experiences everything for the first time. While they have not yet developed visual focus or muscular control, newborns sense the new world around them. Newborn toys should facilitate a baby's learning and stimulate their senses.[1][3] Babies enjoy looking at the world around them like lights, shapes, patterns, and colors.[4] They gravitate toward bright or high-contrast colors with simple designs and changes in sound.[5] This is the best time for a crib mobile that the baby cannot reach. By about 8 weeks, the baby is ready for rattles and teethers, cloth toys, soft squeeze balls, and musical and chime toys.[5]

Before making your purchase, read the safety guidelines and instructions. The major safety concern during this period is choking and suffocation. Make sure stuffed toys are nonflammable, non-toxic, and washable.[2]

Baby Toys (6-12 months): At this age the babies start to sit and crawl. They can reach for and grasp objects, exert control over objects, move them from one hand to the other, and play with their feet.[3][4] Hand-eye coordination begins to improve, and the baby may start babbling that sounds more like real conversation.[6] Suggested toys for babies of this age include stuffed animals, lightweight balls, push toys, activity toys, blocks, toys with wheels and baby books.[3][4][7]

Again, before making your purchase, read the safety guidelines and instructions. The major safety concern during this period is choking and suffocation. Make sure stuffed toys are nonflammable, non-toxic, and washable.[2]

Safety

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) closely monitors and regulates toys. Any toys made in, or imported into the United States after 1995 must comply with CPSC standards.[9]

Always choose age-appropriate toys for your baby. Do not get toys that are very loud, have small parts, loose buttons or eyes, or long strings for your baby.[8] Read and heed the warning labels on the toys. They are there for a reason and are often prompted by an accidents.[5] The major safety concern for children less than 3 years old is choking and suffocation.

Do not buy toys with magnets. If the toy breaks and magnets come off, they can be accidentally swallowed, causing organ damage.[4][8] Toys with long strings or cords can get caught around a new baby’s neck, and cause strangulation.[8] Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the package, which means that they've been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.[9]

Recommended Age

It is important to select age-appropriate toys for your child. A good toy should challenge child's level of development. Children enjoy toys that they can master and that are right for their particular stage of development. If the toy is too sophisticated, it frustrates the child; if it is too simple, it bores the child.[2] Age grading relates to the safety of the toy as well as its play value.[4]

The same toy can carry through many different development stages.[10] For example, blocks can help infants in muscle development and coordination. As child grows, blocks help in many other skills like imagination, creativity, planning, construction principles, etc. WebMD recommends not to rush to replace old toys with new ones.[10]

WebMD also suggests different types of toys that kids benefit from most as they go through different ages. Infants are fascinated with movement, sounds, and simple black and white visuals. Age-appropriate toys for babies include: mobiles, rattles, busy boxes, and anything they can begin to grasp, swipe at, pull, kick, squeeze, or shake.[10]

Improving Skills

Different types of toys are beneficial in developing certain skills in the child at different ages. For example, in case of infants, toys like rattles, play mats, and activity bars improve gross motor skills. Toys like soft blocks and activity blankets help develop fine motor skills. Toys like mobiles and soft books help develop Eye Tracking skills in infants.[3] Ebay Buying Guide maps skill development to toys for different ages.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death from thousands of types of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction. The CPSC protects consumers from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard or can injure children. The CPSC works to ensure the safety of consumer products—such as toys, cribs, power tools, etc.[11] In recent years, the CPSC has recalled numerous toys for various reasons.[4]
